This is a picture taken in Amsterdam’s ——> Airport Schipol of one of the urinals. Notice anything odd? Look a little closer…
There’s a fly just sitting in the bowl there.
Now, if you’re a guy, what are you gonna do when you walk up to the urinal to do your thing? You’re totally going to aim for it. Well guess what, that fly is not actually real. It’s a realistic etching of a fly in the porcelain that is designed to get you to pee in that one spot, since that’s the best spot to avoid splashback. The airport’s managers have cleverly exploited a natural tendency for human males to aim at something to try and wash it down the drain. And apparently it works — “spillage” rates in the airport bathrooms were dramatically reduced after the introduction of urinal flies. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121310977
I think this is the most brilliant thing ever. It’s a crafty way to keep the bathrooms cleaner using a quirk of human behaviour, without being completely obvious about it. Really, how are you going to solve the problem, put a big red arrow with “PEE HERE” lettered into the bowl? This way people still get the point, your bathrooms are cleaner, and it’s executed in a subtle and effective way.
A (relative) oldie, but a goodie.
